The largest lake entirely within Switzerland (217 km²), Lake Neuchâtel offers excellent sailing conditions. It is connected to Lake Biel via the Thielle canal and to Lake Murten via the Broye canal. Maximum depth 153 m, altitude 430 m. Sailing possible from April to October.
Lake Biel (39 km²) is located between the cantons of Bern and Neuchâtel. It is connected to Lake Neuchâtel via the Thielle canal, with continuity all the way to Solothurn via the Aare river. Known for its Saint-Pierre Island and as an ideal lake for leisure navigation and fishing.
Small and peaceful Lake Murten (23 km²) is less busy than its neighbours and connected to Lake Neuchâtel via the Broye canal. Ideal for a quiet sailing trip with views of the medieval town of Murten and the Fribourg Alps.
Lake Geneva is the largest lake in Western Europe (580 km²), shared between Switzerland and France. It offers exceptional sailing with regular winds and Alpine scenery. Ports in the cantons of Vaud, Geneva and Valais on the Swiss side.
Lake Neuchâtel is the central hub of the network: it is connected to Lake Biel via the Thielle canal and to Lake Murten via the Broye canal (there is no direct link between Biel and Murten). From Biel, there is continuity all the way to Solothurn via the Aare river and the Nidau-Büren canal — the Neuchâtel/Murten–Solothurn route is described as Switzerland's longest continuous waterway. This connectivity depends on the water level and ongoing works, though: it is never guaranteed at all times — check current conditions before setting off.
